THE HUDSON RIVER
BOSCOBEL AND DIA. Situated on a bluff on the east bank of the Hudson River, Boscobel House & Gardens offers its visitors inspirational and astounding views of the river and the Hudson Highlands. You'll enjoy a catered box lunch amid glorious scenery – open for independent strolling and picnicking. Then we visit the DIA Foundation Museum for a guided tour. Frederic Church, one of the premier American landscape painters, will forever be associated with the Hudson River Valley. OLANA was the majestic home of Frederic Church. Visitors will be led on a trip through time, seeing a remarkably preserved home, complete with much of the original furniture. World-class paintings from Church's personal collection grace the walls of this beautiful mansion. We will learn the story of Church's life, and how he came to build this wonderful mansion overlooking the Hudson River. Just across the Hudson is CEDAR GROVE, the home of THOMAS COLE, the father of American landscape painting and founder of the Hudson River School of art. The house and studio tour include the historic perennial gardens, the 200-year-old Honey Locust tree, and the west porch where one of the most perfect views of the Catskill Mountain range can be enjoyed. The Dorsky Museum located in New Paltz, is showing a special exhibit of Hudon River paintings titled; The Hudson River to Niagara Falls: 19th-century American Landscape Paintings from the New-York Historical Society. Forty-five 19th-century landscape paintings of the Hudson Valley area, with emphasis on works by artists of the Hudson River School is on view at the Dorsky Museum. We'll follow a tour of the exhibit with lunch at one of New Paltz's most charming restaurants, The Village Tea Room. We'll continue to OLANA, home of Frederic Church, one of the premier American landscape painters. where we will be led on a trip through time, seeing a remarkably preserved home, complete with much of the original furniture. Tour Holland--in glorious bloom . This deluxe itinerary includes a canal boat cruise on the lovely Vecht River as well as specially arranged tours of Private Gardens and garden teas. The trip is led by an expert in Dutch history and gardens. A trip by barge along the beautiful Vecht River will include visits to some of the lovely private mansions and charming villages that line the river. The group will be treated to private gardens such as the historic garden and residence of Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands. We'll visit gardens in and around Apeldorn and the Palace Het Loo. The group will also have the opportunity to be "insiders" at the world's largest Flower Auction where over 15 million stems are brought to market daily. All trip participants receive membership in the Dutch Garden Society.
